Two New Iconic Voyages

The Svalbard Express and The North Cape Express.

Two new sailings have been added to Hurtigruten's list of voyages for 2022.

Norway is our home. We have sailed its magnificent coast since our pioneering founder, Captain Richard With, established Norway’s first reliable coastal link in 1893.

Since then, there’s scarcely a fjord we haven’t sailed, a seafaring community we haven’t befriended, a view we haven’t fallen in love with. In 2023, as we celebrate 130 years of being Norway’s lifeline, we’re launching two exceptional sailings on board the newly refurbished MS Trollfjord.

This same, majestic coastline has been the scene for Hurtigruten for the last 130 years.

One is the revival of an iconic voyage to Svalbard, the crown of Arctic Norway (also known as Spitsbergen). The other is an icon in the making as we sail from Norway’s capital for the first time and explore places even we have never visited. Both venture deep into the Arctic Circle to immerse you in the lives and flavors of Norway’s coast, deliver vital supplies to coastal villages, and create memories to last a lifetime – all beneath the magical northerly lights. Even better, both voyages spend longer at each place than we’ve ever done in the past, so you can really get to know the warm-hearted people of Norway’s coast and islands. Together, they encapsulate our pioneering heritage and herald a future of authentic, sustainable, and meaningful travel that would make our founding father proud.

The return of The Svalbard Express showcases the best of then and now.

Then and now: Svalbard. Hurtigruten launched the first Svalbard Express in 1968, but actually sailed there for the first time in 1896.

The Svalbard Express

The Svalbard Express is a nostalgic voyage back to the northernmost reaches of the world, bathed in the ever-changing light of the midnight sun. We founded the original Svalbard Express to this remote Arctic archipelago in 1968, and it became a lifeline for its community until 1982. The return of The Svalbard Express showcases the best of then and now. Our ground-breaking spirit. Remote hamlets splashed with red rorbuer. Historic ports. Rarely visited islands. Pristine Arctic wilderness prowled by polar bears and sea eagles. Throughout your experience, expect contemporary twists on archived menus, cabin décor, excursions and activities – one-off details that lend extra depth to this truly iconic sailing. For an authentic connection with the heritage, stories and wild beauty of Norway’s coast, choose The Svalbard Express.

There are more polar bears than people in Svalbard.

The Svalbard Express visits some of the most pristine, untouched environments in the world.

The North Cape Express makes history as the first Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express to sail from Oslo.

North Cape is a cape on the northern coast of the island of Magerøya in Northern Norway. It is the northernmost point on mainland Europe.

The North Cape Express

Then, as the northern lights begin their winter’s dance in the skies above, The North Cape Express makes history as the first Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express to sail from Oslo, Norway’s vibrant capital. For the first time, we take guests on a voyage along the length of the coast, spending up to six hours at each place – places we believe best showcase the iconic flavors, adventures, and pristine beauty of Norway. Nobody knows this coastline like us. From Oslo, MS Trollfjord sails to Norway’s oldest lighthouse at Lindesnes, the country’s southernmost point, and sets course for the most northerly, North Cape in the snow-covered reaches of 71 degrees north.

Reindeers were, and still are, an iconic symbol of the far north.

Along the way, we call at ports new to us and visit old friends we haven’t seen for many years. Immerse yourself in the culture of modern cities and traditions of secluded villages. Be still in nature. Savor local foods and flavors. Listen for the splash of a breaching whale. Experience history in the making on The North Cape Express and voyage to the fresh air, remote communities, and spectacular sights of the always astounding Norwegian coast.
